History of the MSBTE (Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education)
The intent of the setting up of an individual educational board which would be responsible for providing higher education has its history as back as 60 years. Before the independence of the country from the British rule, the various types of diploma courses in the fields of Technology and Engineering had been provided by leading institutions like the Cusrow Wadia Institute of Technology (Pune), College of Engineering (Pune), Government Polytechnic (Nagpur), and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (Mumbai) in the state of Maharashtra. A separate Directorate of Technical Education had been established in the year 1948 towards imposing control on the different levels of technical education.
Due to the increase in the era of industrial development in the nation, the need for various diploma courses also increased substantially. As such, the government went forward with establishing an individual Board of Technical Education in the year 1963 in the state of Maharashtra. This board was later named as the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE). The MSBTE was given its autonomous status in the year 1999.
The MSBTE is responsible for conducting summer as well as winter exams every year in the duration of six months apart. The summer exams conducted by the board are organized during the months of April and May and the winter exams conducted by the board are organized during the months of November and December.
